stupid wizard battle
A downloadable game
This came from wanting to (and failing) participate in a bookmark RPG jam. Then, with David Prokopetz on Tumblr posted about his 200-word TTRPG jam, I decided to give it a go with this idea. It's been stewing in my brain for a bit, so it did not take too long to write. It's short enough, I might just put all of it here in the description.

Note on the different version: I just think this is one big joke, so I made:
1. Two versions formatted to be printed two sided, and then cut up so you have a big ole bookmark, like what's in the last screenshot.
2. Two version that are just one copy of the rules with a photo on the other half of the page
3. Two versions that are TWO copies of the rules (to share!) with no photos. Each one is arranged differently, but is the same
4. An art book that is 17 pages! Way longer than the RPG itself! Took longer to take the photos, edit them, and then make an art book than it took me to make this RPG probably (GIMP crashed real bad once).

Stupid Wizard Battle
2 Players Materials: highlighter/pen/pencil, two books, chess timer, construction paper, tape
Set up:
- Make a wizard hat using construction paper and tape. Make sure it fits!
- Each player needs a book. They will be writing in this book.
- Each player holds their book out in front of them for at least 60 seconds.
- Then, spend 60 seconds looking through the book and dogearing pages for powerful words.
- Put on your wizard hats.
- Put 3 minutes each on the chess timer.

Gameplay:
- The oldest player goes first. Open your book and find a powerful word. This word is your SPELL.
- Mark it out with your writing utensil, point to it, and announce it to your opponent.
- Start the chess timer.
- The other player does the same but looking for a word that either: A) Counters or B) Is more powerful than the previous word. Do step 2. Hit the timer.
NOTE: You cannot use a word you have marked out!
Go back and forth one upping/countering each spell until someone's timer runs out. That player loses.
The winner rips up the wizard hat of the loser.

I stumbled upon this game after a long, frustrating day, and playing it made me and my partner feel SO MUCH BETTER. I cannot recommend it enough if you want a short, lighthearted experience! Taping together our wizard hats and coloring/decorating them with markers was incredibly fun, and the inclusion of "stupid" in the title actually helped lower the stakes a great deal and encouraged us to just be silly. I choose JURASSIC PARK by Michael Crichton for my grimoire (capitalist dinosaur horror; special spells included "velociraptor" and "breeding"), and my partner chose MASTER AND COMMANDER by Patrick O'Brian (historical nautical nerdiness; special spells included "sodomy" and "plague"). We ended the game with my partner gleefully ripping my hat to pieces as we both laughed and threw bits of paper at each other. It completely reversed our bad moods <3
I was kind of stressed about going into work tomorrow but then I read this comment and now I am just beaming! I am so glad you had fun, and it means so much to me that you enjoyed it this much! :D
This is so funny. I can't wait to play it
Thank you for creating and sharing this hilarious game! When we played, my dueling partner and I wondered about which sorts of words made the best spells. Long and obscure words? Words with actual occult connotations? Words that were related to the previous words and built some sort of context? Words that seemed silly or dirty, so as to incapacitate your opponent with helpless laughter? Due to my own personal tendency to go slow and overthink things, I usually took too long choosing my words of power, so when the timer ran out, I lost the wizard battle. The victor decided to destroy my wizard hat by grabbing it with both hands and taking a big chomp out of its middle with his teeth. Good game!
Thank you so much! When I was originally thinking about it, I envisioned like people do hot and cold or up and down, like opposites. Then, I thought about how you could kind of make things up as you go. Maybe a bigger word is stronger than a smaller one!
This has been a blast, we tried it and enjoyed it immensely! We didn't stop at the hat though... we battled in full wizard garments!!!
Love to hear it!! I want to find a way to make like a paper staff so bonking people on the head too. Might try to find instructions on that somewhere.
this sounds hilarious! I'll have to give it a shot sometime. I could see it working with more than 2 players in a sort of SuperFight type setup!
I would love to come up with some kind of variant that allows for multiplayer in some way. Teams and free for all. I'll look into that.
